Background of the Study

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has become an integral part of modern education. Teachers' proficiency in using ICT tools can significantly enhance teaching and learning, making education more interactive and engaging. However, in many secondary schools in Damaturu Local Government Area, Yobe State, teachers face challenges in effectively integrating ICT into their teaching practices. This is primarily due to limited exposure to professional development programs that focus on ICT literacy.

Professional development programs for teachers are essential for improving ICT literacy and equipping teachers with the necessary skills to use digital tools effectively in their classrooms. These programs can range from basic computer literacy training to more advanced workshops on using educational software and online teaching platforms. In a rapidly evolving digital landscape, it is crucial for teachers to stay updated with technological trends to ensure that they are preparing students for a technology-driven future.

Statement of the Problem

In Damaturu, many teachers lack sufficient ICT literacy, limiting their ability to integrate digital tools into their teaching methods. As a result, students are not fully exposed to the benefits of technology-enhanced learning, and teachers are not utilizing the full potential of ICT to improve educational outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the current level of ICT literacy among teachers in secondary schools in Damaturu, Yobe State.

  2. To design and implement a professional development program aimed at enhancing ICT literacy among teachers.

  3. To evaluate the impact of the professional development program on teachers' ability to integrate ICT into their teaching practices.

Research Questions

  1. What is the current level of ICT literacy among secondary school teachers in Damaturu?

  2. How effective is the professional development program in enhancing ICT literacy among teachers?

  3. How do teachers perceive the integration of ICT into their teaching practices after attending the professional development program?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Teachers in Damaturu have limited ICT literacy, which affects their ability to integrate ICT into their teaching.

  2. A professional development program will significantly improve the ICT literacy of teachers in secondary schools in Damaturu.

  3. Teachers will report improved teaching practices and greater confidence in using ICT after completing the professional development program.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it aims to enhance teachers' ICT literacy, which in turn will improve the quality of teaching and learning in secondary schools in Damaturu. The study's findings could inform future ICT training programs for educators, contributing to more effective and modernized teaching practices.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on secondary schools in Damaturu Local Government Area, Yobe State, and assess the impact of professional development programs on teachers' ICT literacy. Limitations include potential resistance to adopting ICT tools and the challenge of providing adequate resources for the professional development program.
